Potential Songs

We decided that it would be best to choose a song that doesn't already have a music video, since it would prevent us from being inspired by its original video and thus force us to be more creative. We want to create a product that is from our own thought process and so these songs seemed the most appropriate:

Hesitation // Hot Flash Heatwave

This song has a summery, lighthearted sound to it and a very noticeable guitar, which provides a nice basis for a music video. The main feature, however, are its lyrics, particularly: 'Who's that on the phone, it was you on the line'. My group and I decided that these lyrics could be easily illustrated/amplified visually and so the idea of a narrative/performance video formed. However, the negative with this song is that a narrative would be difficult to achieve throughout, and so we would have to adapt to include disjuncture - something that may not be easy to do effectively.

Mac DeMarco is known for his relaxed, laid-back and fun attitude - his music is summery and chilled and so we decided to shortlist 'Freakin' Out the Neighbourhood' for this reason. Immediately, ideas of using a green screen, cool visuals, and a weird, loose narrative came to mind - we decided that this song would be one we could have fun with. Unfortunately, a video that is based around using a green may not be as gripping/entertaining as we once perceived, which is why we have leaned towards creating a narrative video.

Blood Visions // Jay Reatard

This song is very fast paced (as is the album) and so an action-packed, aggressive music video would fit well with it. Therefore, fast paced editing and a high number of shots would be essential in the production process. The main reason why my group chose this song as a possible choice for our music video was the fact that Jay (coincidence?) looks extremely alike to Jay Reatard. Therefore, a performance based video would be perfect for this song.

I was drawn to this song by its length; at only 15 seconds long, I felt that it would be a creative challenge to create a narrative in such a short amount of time. As well as this, there is a fairly continuous beat to the song which would help in matching the visuals of the video to the music - a feature that Andrew Goodwin states is prominent in most music videos. (Fuck) incited an idea of a fast paced narrative (since it is so short) and I felt that a grungy, dark visual style would fit with the tone of the song. Incorporating a stop motion style of filming into the video would keep the pace of the video fast and snappy, as to keep the audience engaged. I would possibly use black and white film, since film often produces more authentic images.

Listening to this song, in context to the music video task, my group and I immediately thought of an autumnal theme: our ideas were really clear and we generated a simple narrative. The lyrics provoke ideas of youth, since they discuss a relationship between two people. As well as this, the line 'acid flashbacks in your kitchen' is a pointer towards rebellion; our narrative could therefore depict a man who wishes to rebel from his everyday life, and find his youth again. For us, this was a sign that this track would be fun and easy to work with, since our ideas came naturally.
